The group «Barrica» has been representing Brazilian culture as well as traditional dances and music, particularly those from the north-eastern State of Maranhão, since 1985. It reflects the cultural crossing of Brazilian people, with its indigenous, European and African roots. Its costumes are mainly inspired by traditional Maranhão festivities – such as Tambor de Crioula (representing Maranhão’s Afro-Brazilian culture), Bumba Meu Boi, Boizinho Barrica or Bicho-Terra. Some costumes are made from the fibre of the Buriti palm tree, which is typical of northern Brazil.
