RFI in brief…
Originating in 1975, The meetings of International Folklore Fribourg (RFI), is a unique annual demonstration of its kind in Switzerland today; Thanks in part to the commitment and enthusiasm of various figures from Fribourg Switzerland whom were fascinated by Folklore not only inside Switzerland, but around the world.
The festival welcomes an average of 8 out of 10 groups from various nations each year. The organizers have the option to choose from authentic or traditional groups accompanied with instruments of origin or re-constructed instrument. The various groups share their Folklore by demonstrating traditional regional dances decorated with real or reconstructed costumes.
The RFI Presents the traditional Folklore via Cultural demonstration, Shapes, Authenticity, and Scene elaboration with strict emphasis on costume and music. The groups are then chosen according to precise criteria. The Materials used has to reflect the peculiarity of the region of origin, the costumes has to mark the individual characteristics particularly in the feminine costume. Seen often as the dominating role in the musical and popular dance, special attention is paid to the orchestra. According to the regional traditions, the use of traditional instruments and quality of execution; these criteria are particularly important because of the collaboration of the festival with Radio and Television.
During one week time, the RFI takes us through a colored world tour of both tradition and modernity. The show runs in various places – indoor and outdoor, concert halls, conferences and reconstruction of ceremonies and even demonstration of traditional games. The heart of the demonstration beats on in the Georges-Python square where it is filled with villagers from nations represented by the groups. In addition, one can discover the traditional small business craft from the invited countries where at least 50000 individuals attend and an average of about 900 attend the shows each evening . The RFI is successful thanks to the work of the committee of about 15 people and volunteer of about 250 individuals.
